Why Is My Furnace Humming?

Why Is My Furnace Humming?

Your furnace makes all sorts of noises and most of them are part of the regular day-to-day operation of your HVAC system. A loose venting system can rattle or your furnace could be “kicking on”. Most of these sounds you don’t even notice anymore because you hear them so often.

A “humming” furnace could very well be part of its normal operation but since you are noticing it let’s look into the issue with more detail.

The Mysterious Humming Furnace

The ductwork/venting and your plenum/air return.

These materials are all made from thin sheets of metal. These sheets of metal wear over time and become more pliable and the seams become loose. The “humming” sound you are hearing may be air passing through the sheet metal causing a vibration. That vibration could be the reason you hear the “hum”.

The electrical current in your transformer.

The transformer located in your furnace may be humming a tune when the electrical current in your home passes through it. If you have ever heard a humming sound coming from a telephone pole in your neighborhood or city it is the same principle. The transformer on the pole is humming due to the electrical current running through it causing small vibrations.

Last but certainly not least – motor failure.

A very sudden and loud humming noise is what you would be hearing. This noise is most likely coming from your blower. If you hear this “humming” it may mean the motor is failing. Once your motor fails you will need a professional to replace your motor.
