Use Your Window Blinds

The hot part of each day varies from location to locations. For the most part you should close your blinds from about 10:00am or 11:00am all the way through 5:00pm or 6:00pm. Closing your blinds reduces the greenhouse effect in your home. This effect turns sunlight to heat. Wherever sunlight hits, a portion of that light is converted into heat. That heat is trapped in your home and causes the temperature in your house to rise.

Monitor the Doors In Your Home

The more doors you can keep closed the cooler you can keep your home. Closing the outside doors and any inside doors to rooms that are used less frequently during the day can help keep your home cooler.

Change Your Ceiling Fan Rotation to Counter-Clockwise

Ceiling fans should be adjusted seasonally. A counter-clockwise rotation and higher fan speeds will create a cooling breeze effect to cool off your family and guests.

Utilize Your Bathroom Fans

Bathroom fans and even an exhaust fan in your kitchen can help to expel the hot air in your home. Hot air rises so these fans work great to expel hot air from a hot day, hot shower, or hot meal.

The Night Air

If the temperature drops significantly at night where you live you can use the outside air to cool your home. Cracking your windows a little at night will allow your home to cool rapidly and stay cool during the day. Make sure to close the windows and blinds before it gets too hot.

Home lighting

Incandescent lights are highly inefficient nowadays and a high percent of their energy is lost in the form of heat. Ditching incandescent bulbs for a different type of light is a great idea when it comes to keeping your home cool and even your energy bill low.
